Actress Jennifer Aniston is best known for her role as Rachel Green in the long-running sitcom "Friends." Aniston won an Emmy, a Golden Globe and a People's Choice Award for her work on "Friends."Aniston has proven there is life after "Friends" by starring in many successful films such as "Bruce Almighty," "Office Space," "Along Came Polly" and "The Break-Up.


"Her marriage, and divorce, from actor Brad Pitt along with being romantically linked to actor Vince Vaughn, has kept her in the media spotlight.


Aniston was born in Sherman Oaks, California, on February 11, 1969, but she grew up in New York City where her father was a soap opera star. Her father John Aniston, who is Greek, appeared on the soap operas "Days of Our Lives," "Love of Life" and "Search for Tomorrow." Her mother, Nancy Dow, was also an actress and Aniston has two half-brothers, John Melick and Alex Aniston.Aniston spent part of her childhood in Greece with her family and her godfather was the late Greek actor Telly Savalas. 


Aniston graduated from Manhattan's Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts. Her desire to be an actress was fueled by her work in the Off Broadway shows "For Dear Life" and "Dancing on Checker's Grave."Upon arriving in Hollywood in the late 80's, Aniston starred in several series but all were quickly canceled. She thought about giving up acting but then auditioned for the "Friends" sitcom which was set to debut on NBC in their 1994-1995 fall line-up. The producers of the show wanted Aniston to audition for the role of Monica Geller, which went to her now long-time friend Courteney Cox, but Aniston persuaded them she would be a better Rachel Green. She was cast as Rachel and played the character from 1994 until the show ended in 2004."Friends" was such a success and had such a following that even Aniston's hair style was copied by women all over the world. The hairstyle was known as the "Rachel.
"Aniston, and each of her co-stars, received a salary of one million dollars per episode for the last two seasons of "Friends" which made her and her female co-stars the highest paid television actresses of all time.Aniston was listed as the 10th richest woman in the entertainment industry for the year 2007 by Forbes Magazine behind powerhouses such as Oprah Winfrey, J.K. Rowling and Madonna.


Aniston's private life has been highly publicized, including her marriage to Brad Pitt. Prior to her marriage, she dated musician Adam Duritz and was reportedly engaged to actor Tate Donovan. In July, 2000, she married Pitt in a lavish Malibu wedding.The Aniston-Pitt marriage was considered successful in Hollywood, but it came crashing to an end when the couple separated in January of 2005. They divorced later that year.Aniston became romantically linked with actor Vince Vaughn and in 2006 the press speculated that they were engaged. The couple split up, however, at the end of 2006.Aniston has said her divorce from Pitt caused her to reconcile with her mother, whom she had been estranged from for nearly a decade.Aniston has been listed among People Magazine's "Most Beautiful People in the World" and is the godmother of Courteney Cox and David Arquette's daughter Coco.
